Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a professional VIP Chauffeur in Central England? Well, I’d like to tell you what my typical day looks like and also what it feels like as an executive driver. Aside from treating high-profile clients like Royalty VIP’s and driving along long motorways for hours, there are significant other benefits for me in my career as private Chauffeur. More than you might first think!
From beautiful countryside routes to drop-offs at city centre luxury hotels and conference centres, I get to see the whole of the UK as a professional private driver, and it is a true privilege. I challenge you to ask me to name every major city in the UK, as I’ve probably been there at least once!
It’s 3.00 am and my alarm goes off on my chauffeur work phone. My wife is fast asleep but it’s time for me to start my day as a VIP chauffeur for VIP Executive Travel Midlands Ltd.
I love this job. The hours can really vary depending on what chauffeur travel reservations we have each week, but my favourite bookings are the early morning airport transfer collections. Why so, I hear you ask?
Well, there are many reasons for this. Firstly, it’s the ultimate calm environment to get ready for work in. There’s no stress or distraction; just focus on the day ahead as a chauffeur in Birmingham and beyond. When I wake up at 3.00 am to get my professional driving suit on, I can get ready in total peace whilst the house is sleeping. First of all, I go downstairs and make myself a coffee in my VIP Executive Travel mug (a very kind gift from our company Director Richard Sheppard – I call him Shep Sir – if you know, you know). Whilst my toast is in the toaster, I check my phone and the planned route for today. I look out for any traffic updates on the motorway as I’m heading for Heathrow airport from my home in the West Midlands today. It looks pretty clear and thankfully there are no accidents or holdups that I should be aware of. I always get up with plenty of extra time to allow for this. Many of our chauffeur rides are to Birmingham Airport (BHX) but I look forward to the longer routes.
My VIP clients today are Susan and Anthony and they live in Solihull in the Midlands. They are off to Milan for a business trip and their flight leaves London at 9.30 am. I am scheduled to collect them at 4.30 am. I always like to be early and prompt – but that’s just standard procedure for our business. A few days before any chauffeur booking with VIP Executive Travel Midlands Ltd a group chat is set up on the WhatsApp application so that the driver (usually myself, Lomesh) is connected with the customer. This enables smooth communication between us both, especially when I am outside waiting for them. Or, in some cases, flights can be delayed and having a private group chat with your driver means that we can update each other very quickly and easily. I think this is important to say, as this is all part of our premium chauffeur-driven service. All messages are strictly confidential and GDPR is consented to ahead of time with our clients.
Rather than drive and have to find parking at the airport, our clients love the ease, simplicity and familiarity of having us chauffeur them from their home in the Solihull area directly down to any London airport – it varies, depending on their work trip schedule. This is the Power Couple’s tenth trip with VIP Executive Travel Midlands Ltd and by now, we know each other very comfortably. We must be doing something right for them to have booked us ten times. We have a great relationship with them.
A big part of being a chauffeur is understanding people. As part of my service, I operate in a very discreet and professional manner. I quietly observe how my passengers are. If they seem like they want to chat – I will gladly engage in conversation with them but it’s more often the case that our VIP guests have chosen to travel with us because they want a complete a ‘zenn’ environment to concentrate on their work whilst traveling, or they want to rest after or before a long day ahead in their businesses. Thus, my job as a luxury chauffeur is to ‘read the car’ and make the experience as pleasant and relaxing as possible for them.
I’m all showered, suited and booted so it’s time to leave the house! I do a final check of our Mercedes Saloon before setting off, but in truth, our premium vehicles are always cleaned and valeted the day before any VIP journey. We use an excellent valet company nearby. I love sitting in the driver’s seat of our Mercedes S Class private car. Being a chauffeur means I have the great privilege of driving some very luxurious vehicles. I love the smell of the leather seats and their first-class comfort is to die for. I feel pretty VIP even as the driver, I must admit. Sometimes, I even put my sunglasses on, just for an added vibe. Ok, who do I think I am? Just kidding. But I will wear sunglasses if it’s very bright and sunny!
When I first met our VIP travel clients Susan and Anthony, I courteously greeted them with a bow of the head and an opening of the car door. These days, however, Susan likes to give me a friendly hug and Anthony shakes my hand. This morning was no different, both of them were very happy, maybe even relieved to see me. We have built up a good relationship and they are relaxed and happy in my vehicle. They usually choose to travel in our Mercedes S Class but if they have additional work colleagues with them, they will travel in our Mercedes V class which can comfortably accommodate 7-8 passengers along with luggage. We have copious room for bags in the V class boot.
The second-best benefit of being a private hire driver in the early hours of the morning is being able to see the sunrise. In the summer months this is particularly stunning. As I set off for our private client’s house, the morning is crisp, the birds are singing, and I enjoy a smooth and peaceful journey over to them. I put on classic FM. Of course – when our VIP customers are in the car, they can choose whatever music they like but a lot of our clients enjoy the calming ambience of classical music playlists as often they need to concentrate on working on the go. A chauffeur is a perfect way to maximise your work productivity in that sense. Especially on longer journeys.
Susan & Anthony love Starbucks coffee so I always go out of my way to stop via this coffee shop on the Solihull Retail Park en route to their home. I find as a VIP Chauffeur that it’s those little thoughtful details that make all the difference to our client’s overall experience. Anthony takes a latte with two sweeteners and Susan loves a hot chocolate with cream.
The journey down to London in our Mercedes S Class is smooth and the roads are calm. It’s a beautiful time to travel. As I focus on the road ahead of me, with Susan and Athony in the back of the car resting their eyes in the early hours of this morning, I feel a sense of pride and happiness that they trust me and our service at VIP Executive Travel Midlands Ltd. As we approach Oxford services in this exquisite chauffeur-driven experience, I notice that Anthony and Susan are both well rested after an hour’s sleep and so they’re now able to start doing some work. Anthony’s working on his laptop and Susan makes a few quick calls ahead of their flight. Susan always tells me how fantastic it is to be able to work whilst being chauffeured! They seem like they want to chat for a bit now, so we have a short conversation and exchange some jokes.
Today is a perfectly booked-out day for me because as soon as I have chauffeured Anthony & Susan to Heathrow, I have some time in between to take a slow drive over to Reading where I’ll be picking up another VIP client from the Malmaison Hotel Reading and driving them back to the Midlands! It’s a perfect round trip for me. I like to fill our calendar effectively so it’s magic when trips like that work out so perfectly timely.
I feel totally relaxed as a professional Chauffeur. I’m on the ball and focused on the experience for our clients but I am honestly very relaxed because all of our journeys are pre-planned.
We’re at Heathrow Airport now and so it’s nearly time to wave Anthony and Susan off.
We pull into the short stay car park which means we can park-up in the closest car park to their departing terminal, just a short distance from the arrivals or departures lounge for maximum convenience. They love this!
I exit our luxurious Mercedes car and immediately open the door for Susan first and then I open Anthony’s door. The idea is that they shouldn’t have to lift a finger when they travel with us. I get their suitcases out of the boot and then it’s time to say our farewells.
I confirm that I’ll see them in a few days when they return and I wish them a successful business trip. I smile, they smile and it’s a great start to their day as well as mine.
I head off to Reading excited to offer a VIP service to the next customer.
What’s amazing for me is that after the Reading VIP trip back home to the West Midlands, I am actually just home in time to greet my wife, and we even have time to go and get some Fish and Chips by the River in Bewdley, Worcestershire. My goodness, the chips here are so delicious and after a day of chauffeuring, this is such a treat. We have some VIP chauffeur clients here in Bewdley too, it’s a beautiful part of the World.
I share the details of my day with my wife and she enjoys asking me questions like ‘did you get to drive any celebrities today, husband dear’. I smile and think, I really do have a great job and a great life partner.
It’s time for me to hang up my chauffeur uniform and get to bed early as I’m needed at a major Sporting event tomorrow…Wimbledon Championships! I feel really positive about this one and I know our corporate clients are really excited too. All the accounts team have been treated to a VIP trip to celebrate their hard work.
